Found this fascinating set of gang graffiti from the 70’s, which is a weird obsession of mine. Not just the graffiti, but 70’s-80’s Latino gang culture. It’s a product of my teenage love for Love & Rockets and the band X (who used the graffiti as graphics on their albums). I took Chicano history in college which just fed my obsession, and I passed the love on to my sister (aka Baby Monster, aka Midget, aka La Miguita). We both memorized the movie Mi Vida Loca, and “Sad Girl” was a jokey nickname for both of us. Plus, it is the most awesome Pretty Girls Make Graves song ever. I found out that the nickname comes from the song “Sad Girl” by a 60’s East LA band called Thee Midnighters. Ok, first - I HAVE TO HEAR THIS SONG. And second? Where did the practice of spelling “the” as “thee” for bands come from? (A circular reference - “Thee Forty Thieves” was a band in L&R, right?) |

huh. I thought that “Thee Headcoats” was borrowing the “Thee” thing from the Downliner Sect (as they borrowed the deerstalker hats), and it was a british 60s garage thing. But I see no “Thee” in “The Downliner Sect.” Hm…

In the 50s and 60s there was a thing called clubs in all sides of LA.They were youngsters elementary middle school and higschool kids.They had names like Thee Magicians Club Thee Rascals(both of these clubs are still active TMC in Hollywood TRS in Atwater Villege in Los Angeles.They are both gangs.Anyways they did that brcause it gave the name some class.The same way the neighborhoods write in Old English you know.And thats how THEE Midniters got the name, they grew up among all these types of Clubs in East Los.

the most accurate latinos movie i’ve seen is blood in blood out. its pretty old but tells a great story. theres alot of character development.yeah.i actually started a crew of girls named sad girls por vida after the pretty girls make graves song,but we replace “por” with an “x” because they mean the same in spanish.
