Sink, sank, sunk
|
Nice mention of the shuttering of Kitchen Sink magazine on SFGate. I have illos in the last two issues. It’s really a pity that it can’t keep going, but indie distro is pretty much impossible to negotiate. If you don’t start off with government funding or if you aren’t lucky enough to be actually financed, it’s almost impossible to keep going. Bitch and Punk Planet are the beautiful exceptions to the rule, but even they struggle. Same thing happens to small comics publishers. Distro is tough (especially with, y’know a monopoly in place that discourages innovation or niche markets), and the money, when you get it is small. This is all tied up in my head with all mainstream media being owned by–what, five different corporations?–the DIY movement as a revolutionary artistic statement, the aging of the ‘zine generation, and I don’t know what all else - I am having mad insomnia right now, and everything is a little fuzzy and jumbled. (Seriously–I haven’t slept more than 3 hours a night in the last 6 days. My brain is pretty much like a dish sponge.) Anyways. Go donate to KS so they can get the last two issues out. Or buy some sure-to-be-collectable back issues. Back to staring at the inside of my eyelids… |

That’s too bad, I really liked the issues that I bought from you.
Have you heard about this: http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/2006/12/22/bechdel-reacts-to-well-deserved-fame/
Time BOOK of the year. There’s very little left for comics to conquer.

I’ve been thinking about zines lately… there are fewer of them now, and I wonder if blogs are the new zines.
